Alcombe means "Valley of the Alders" and dates back to Saxon times.
Alcombe Somerset 1938 - photo presented with the kind permisssion of www.grumpystumpy.com
Alcombe was once an agricultural hamlet, separated from its larger neighbour, Minehead, by almost a mile of fields. The route of the A39 was little more than a rutted track, and for several centuries the Manor of Alcombe belonged to the Benedictine monks of Bath.
There were at least two attempts to mine for copper and lead. The excavations proved unsuccessful and farming remained the main occupation of the area.
By the 1930s new homes were built, and Minehead expanded towards Alcombe, but the pretty cottages of the old hamlet still survive.
