As a non-commercial Community web site we rely totally on people in the community to send us information and photos that will add to other people's knowledge of Exmoor and its surrounding area. Many thanks to the thousands of people who have contributed information so far to Everything Exmoor.Do you know the history of a particular place or have a story to tell about a local character? If so please send it along.
I'm writingg from a TV Company called Televisionary based in Modbury in South Devon. We have been commissioned to produce a new late night series for ITV Westcountry, which will be presented by Richard O’Brien. The series will be taking a sideways look at death and all things related to it. We will be talking to members of the public about their own unusual funeral plans, chatting with local historians about unexplained mysterious deaths of the past and featuring people whose work brings them into contact with death. The series will be entitled “Richard O’Brien’s Dead Strange” and will allow us to take a left-field look at the one thing that is guaranteed to hit us all.
For some viewers the career choices of some people may seem rather unusual and in this series we hope to open windows into the professions that are connected to death. We would like to feature the work of grave diggers and grave yard keepers, memorial masons, crematorium technicians, forensic pathologists, undertakers etc. We would like to talk to them about what they have to do on a daily basis (or if they are retired what they used to do) and why they became interested in this field of work. We imagine that they are some real characters out there who have taken great pride in their work but also have some interesting stories to tell. If you know of anyone that you think would make an interesting contribution to the programme please do not hesitate to give them our details.
We are also interested in people who have already made extraordinairy plans for their own funeral, or have had an unusual will request, or would even like to be taken shopping for their perfect coffin, urn of burial place.
Also in Exmoor there may be some weird and wonderful death related tales that would be good to tell on the programme. We aren’t looking for Ghost Stories but instead real life historical tales. An example of one that we will be covering in the show is the story of Jay’s Grave on Dartmoor where from the 18th Century up to this day fresh flowers appear mysteriously on the grave every day but no one knows who puts them there.
In TV terms, in the UK, death is often a taboo subject. This is not the case in all cultures, for instance the Mexicans are far more celebratory, holding the “Day of the Dead” festival which to some British folk may seem rather unusual. We do not want to make a series which is in anyway disrespectful or undignified but we hope to touch upon the lighter, and also more informative side of death, where sometimes truth can be stranger than fiction and therefore become an interesting talking point.
I would be most grateful if you at Everything Exmoor could have a think about people that could make brilliant contributions to the programme. We obviously would love to hear about anything else that you think makes an interesting tale for the series!
Many thanks for your time.
Best regards, Gemma Selley

Exmoor Holiday Guide - Rescued - posted 19th Nov 2007
A three-way deal has been finalised between the Exmoor Tourist
Association, the West Somerset Council and the directors of Exmoor Coast and
Country Ltd that has secured the future of the Exmoor Coast and Country Guide until at least 2010.
This has ended three weeks of intense negotiation between the ETA and the
Council. The directors of EC&C Ltd are delighted with the outcome and are
very appreciative of the efforts made to ensure this outcome by all
concerned and welcome the invitation of the ETA to become directors on the
new Board. The full details will become apparent from the press releases
already made.
For now though so that you are in the picture, the new Board
will look like this:
Antony Brunt (Chairman ETA)
Nigel Smythe (Vice-Chairman ETA)
John Richards (Former Director and Shareholder)
Roger Barbee (Former Director and Vice-Chairman ETA)
Michael Downes (West Somerset Councillor and Tourism Portfolio Holder) o
Company Secretary: Naomi Griffiths (Secretary and Treasurer ETA)
This list may be expanded at a later date.
In the meantime it is recognised that the first priority is to get the 2008
guide printed and out into the world. The former directors have been
continuing to work to this end despite the letter that they had to circulate
three weeks ago. So despite all the problems the Guide will only be
slightly late, and as advertising in the Christmas Holiday Press has been
booked as normal we are hoping that everything will be totally back on track
early in January.
Despite the lateness and to help those who had held back due to the doubts
created we are still able to accept new advertisers up until next Wednesday
21st November. To those who have waited patiently for this result we say,"Thank You". To those who have had reservations but would now like to
support us for 2008 we say "Welcome". We also wish to thank everyone who
signed the petition in our support and say that if any of those feel they
would like to extend their support and advertise their business in the 2008
Guide, there is still time and we will be pleased to welcome them too.
Those wishing for a Rate Card can speed up the process by going to www.exmoorholidayguide.co.uk , click on to "Site Information" then click on
to the link for those wishing to advertise.
If you would like to advertise in the 2008 guide please contact Allan on:

We look forward to hearing from you
Yours sincerely
Roger Barbee
Director, on behalf of the new Board
